Are Dental Crowns Worth it? Pros and Cons of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are a type of restorative dental treatment. In comparison to the alternatives, getting a dental crown is a very effective operation for recovering a tooth that has been damaged. They can improve both the functionality and the appearance of your teeth.

It is important to research the advantages and disadvantages of dental crowns to understand whether they are a suitable solution for you. In this article, we will look at the pros and cons of getting dental crowns.

Advantages of Dental Crowns

A number of dental problems can be solved with dental crowns. They can be used to:

  • Restore a tooth that has been damaged
  • Keep a worn-down tooth from further deteriorating
  • Restore tooth decay
  • Protect a tooth after a root canal surgery
  • Keep a badly fractured or cracked tooth together
  • Cover a dental implant in order to restore a missing tooth
  • Improve the appearance of a tooth with aesthetic issues such as stains or discoloration

A successful dental crown looks and functions just like a natural tooth and is very comfortable.  Because they are durable and often endure for at least 5 to 15 years, dental crowns are an excellent long-term option. However, their longevity can be negatively affected if proper oral hygiene is not maintained.

Dental crowns are regarded as a sort of dental restoration rather than as a treatment. Dental crowns made of porcelain or other durable materials are intended to restore damaged teeth while resembling a natural tooth in form and function.

Dental crowns are a crucial component of dental care because they let dentists save decayed or damaged teeth rather than extracting them entirely. In addition to being used in the installation of dental implants, dental crowns can be used following a root canal as well.

They can also be a solution for aesthetic concerns like discoloration, stains, and small chips. In some cases, crowns can be used to fix misalignment, spacing, or unattractive tooth size.

It can be very unpleasant or painful to have a tooth that is decayed or has been damaged. The signs of swelling, tooth sensitivity on the operated tooth and its neighboring teeth, and general toothache can all be relieved by a dental crown.

Depending on what your dental problems are dental crowns may be the best treatment for you. After the initial consultation, your dentist will tell you the best dental treatment option for your needs, expectations, and budget.

Disadvantages of Dental Crowns

On the other hand, while they are often very successful treatments, dental crowns can have certain disadvantages too.

Some individuals may experience toothache soon after the procedure, particularly tooth sensitivity to heat or cold. This can be lessened by using toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. However, this kind of discomfort is typically not long-lasting and stops in a few days.

The most obvious disadvantage is the necessity of tooth preparation before the installation of dental crowns. Before a dental crown can be placed, the tooth must be filed down in order to fit within a crown. Otherwise, the crown would not be able to fit between the tooth on either side and it would be too tall. The tooth preparation is irreversible and once a tooth has been shaved down, it will always need to be covered by a dental crown. As dental crowns last 5-15 years on average, this means that they will need to be replaced.

Dental crowns, especially porcelain ones, are prone to chipping. Small chips can often be fixed without replacing the entire crown, but in case of bigger or multiple cracks may call for a new crown replacement. In order to prevent chipping avoid chewing on hard foods, grinding, biting your nails, and using your teeth as a tool to open packages.

In some patients, the dental cement that holds the crown in place may wash away. As a result, the crown will become loose, allowing bacteria to enter the tooth and cause decay. The crown may occasionally fall out completely, usually as a result of an improper fit or insufficient dental cement to hold it in place, necessitating re-fitting or removal of the crown. If the dental crown is not fitted properly, or it becomes loose and moves slightly, it can irritate the gums or cause damage to the teeth around it. If you feel any discomfort concerning your dental crown, consult your dentist as quickly as possible.

It is important to note that dental crowns are typically very successful and can last years before they need a replacement when performed by an experienced dentist using good quality materials.  The mentioned disadvantages are rare occasions. It can be said that the advantages of dental crowns exceed the disadvantages.
