A gastric sleeve costs £8,000 to £13,000 privately in the UK and £2,800 to £4,500 as an all-inclusive package in Türkiye — a difference of 60–70%. On the NHS it is free, if you qualify and can wait two to three years.
Those three numbers explain almost all of the traffic to this page. What they do not explain is the cost that appears afterwards, which is where this guide is going to spend most of its time.

The cost most people do not price in
A sleeve permanently removes around 80% of the stomach. That changes how you absorb nutrients for the rest of your life, and it means lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation plus annual blood monitoring — iron, B12, folate, vitamin D, calcium.
Here is the part that catches people out:
The NHS does not fund routine aftercare for private weight-loss surgery paid for abroad. If you have a sleeve in Türkiye and return home, your GP is not obliged to take on the long-term monitoring that operation created, and many practices decline. You may then be paying privately for blood work and dietetic review, every year, indefinitely.
This does not make surgery abroad a bad decision. Thousands of British patients have good outcomes every year. It makes it a decision you should take with the aftercare arranged in advance rather than assumed — because a £3,500 operation with no follow-up pathway can become more expensive, and more dangerous, than a £10,000 one with a clear plan.

Can you get a gastric sleeve on the NHS?
Yes, if you meet NICE criteria:
- BMI 40 or above, or
- BMI 35–39.9 with a significant obesity-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnoea
- Lower thresholds apply for some ethnic groups, where obesity-related risk begins at a lower BMI
- Recent-onset type 2 diabetes generally warrants expedited assessment
- Evidence of engagement with a supervised weight management programme
The obstacle is rarely eligibility. It is time: waiting lists in England routinely exceed two to three years from referral to operation, and some patients are removed from lists for weight fluctuation while they wait.
Worth knowing: being on an NHS list does not prevent you going private, but tell both teams. Undisclosed surgery complicates your care badly if a complication arises.
Why Türkiye costs a third of the UK price
The difference is structural, not clinical. Salaries, property, insurance and drug costs are far lower, and Turkish bariatric centres operate at volumes UK units do not approach. High volume correlates with lower complication rates in bariatric surgery — this is one of the areas where the cost saving does not imply a quality trade-off.
What differs is everything around the operation. A UK private package includes a named surgeon you can see next month if something worries you. A Türkiye package includes a hospital stay and a hotel. Both are legitimate; they are not the same product, and the price gap partly reflects that.
What an overseas quote should include
- Surgeon’s name and bariatric case volume per year
- Hospital accreditation, and what happens if you need intensive care
- Leak test protocol before discharge
- Length of hospital stay and hotel nights included
- What is covered if a complication occurs — revision surgery, extended stay, repatriation
- Written aftercare plan for years one through five, and who delivers it
- Whether they will provide an operative report your GP can act on
That last item sounds administrative and is not. A British GP asked to manage a patient after surgery they have no records for is being asked to work blind, and it is the single most common reason follow-up breaks down.
