Those two ranges describe the same operation. Which one you end up paying depends almost entirely on what the clinic bundles into its quote.

London runs roughly 10–25% above regional centres for identical work by comparably qualified surgeons. That premium reflects property and staffing costs, not surgical outcome.
What should be included in the price
A complete quote covers the surgeon’s fee, the anaesthetist, the facility, pre-operative consultations, post-operative care and follow-up — usually for up to two years, because a nose continues to settle for at least twelve months.
Ask specifically about these, because they are the ones that appear later as separate invoices:
- Follow-up duration. Two years is standard for reputable UK practice. A quote covering six weeks is not comparable.
- Revision policy. Some surgeons perform minor revisions at no surgeon’s fee within a defined window; you still pay theatre and anaesthetic costs. Get the terms in writing.
- Overnight stay. Often included for septorhinoplasty, often not for cosmetic-only work.
- Splint removal and post-op imaging. Usually included, occasionally not.
Will the NHS pay for a nose job?
Not for appearance. The NHS does not fund cosmetic rhinoplasty.
It may fund surgery where there is a functional problem — a deviated septum causing genuine breathing obstruction, damage from trauma, or a congenital deformity. In practice this means a septoplasty or septorhinoplasty aimed at airway function, and any cosmetic improvement is incidental rather than the goal.
Two things worth knowing. Referral is through your GP to an ENT specialist, and thresholds have tightened — documented obstruction is required, not discomfort. And if you are approved for functional surgery, you generally cannot pay a top-up to have cosmetic work done at the same time on the NHS list; that has to be a private procedure.
Why quotes for the same nose vary by £6,000
Three factors, in order of how much they actually move the price:
1. Surgeon experience and volume. Rhinoplasty is widely considered the most technically demanding operation in facial plastic surgery. A surgeon performing several hundred a year prices differently from one performing thirty, and the gap in revision rates is the reason.
2. What is bundled. A £4,200 quote and a £9,000 quote can describe the same surgery with different inclusion lists. Compare total cost of care, not headline fees.
3. Location. Central London carries a premium that has nothing to do with the operation.
Going abroad: the honest arithmetic
A primary rhinoplasty at an accredited Istanbul hospital typically costs £2,500 to £4,500 all-in — a saving of 60–70%, or roughly £3,000 to £7,000 after flights and accommodation.
The cost difference is largely structural: salaries, property and insurance are lower, and high-volume Turkish rhinoplasty surgeons often perform 200–400 procedures a year, well above typical UK volumes. Volume matters in this operation more than in most.
But there are three things a price comparison will not tell you, and they decide whether travelling is sensible for you:
- Revision is the real financial risk. Revision rhinoplasty costs more than the original operation anywhere in the world — £7,500–£12,500+ in the UK. If a cheap primary operation needs revising, the total exceeds what a considered choice would have cost. Ask any surgeon, at home or abroad, what their revision rate is and who pays for it.
- Swelling outlasts your trip. A nose takes 12 months or more to settle, and the first post-operative year is when questions arise. Ask how follow-up works once you are home, and whether the surgeon reviews photographs remotely.
- Cartilage and complexity. Revision cases, thick skin, and noses needing rib or ear cartilage grafts are not “cheap abroad” cases. They are the cases where surgeon selection matters most and price should matter least.
A straightforward primary rhinoplasty on a healthy patient is the case where travelling makes clear financial sense. A complex revision is the case where it usually does not.
Questions to ask before you book anything
- How many primary rhinoplasties do you perform each year, and how many revisions of your own work?
- Is this quote all-inclusive? What is billed separately?
- How long does follow-up last, and what does it cover?
- If a revision is needed, who pays for surgeon, theatre and anaesthetic?
- Can I see before-and-after photographs of patients with a nose and skin type like mine, at 12 months rather than 6 weeks?
That last question is the most revealing one. Six-week photographs flatter every surgeon, because swelling hides irregularities. Twelve-month results are the honest ones.
